Male breast reduction, also called gynecomastia surgery, is actually quite common. Occurring in one or both breasts, gynecomastia is characterized by an unusually large amount of breast tissue in men. Although gynecomastia has been linked to certain medications, use of marijuana, and medical problems, there is no known definitive cause for the condition. For men who have larger breasts and feel self-conscious about their appearance, male breast reduction can remove fat and/or glandular tissue leaving the chest flatter and better contoured.
Our Technique
This procedure is an outpatient procedure traditionally performed under a IV sedation or general anesthesia, taking anywhere from 1 hr to 2 hours. The technique used can vary depending on whether your enlarged breasts have more fat tissue or glandular tissue. In many cases, Dr. Hunsicker can perform the surgery using LipoSelection by Vaser, which can reduce the incision and eventual scarring. This technique is best when there is more fat tissue. If you have more glandular tissue, it will have to be surgically removed through a small incision near the edge of the areola (darker skin around the nipple).
After surgery you may experience some swelling and bruising for a week or two and may need some pain medication in the first few days. You will need to wear a surgical garment for about 3 weeks. You should expect to have lifting and physical activity restrictions for 4-6 weeks.
Our Before & After Photos
Patient One
This is a 30 year old man who is 5’11” and 190 lbs. He desired a male breast reduction, for a condition known as gynocomastia. He also hoped to correct some asymmetry as well. Two separate LipoSelection by Vaser procedures were required to correct this problem. During the first procedure, 350 cc were removed from each side, and 250 cc from both sides during the second procedure. A quote from this patient says it all: “For the first time in my life I feel normal. I can go swimming and get in a hot tub without being embarrassed. Thank you!”
