The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, often referred to by its product name Botox®, is a popular non-surgical injection that temporarily reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases, and crows feet near the eyes. Botox® Cosmetic works by weakening the muscles that cause facial expressions. Once the treated muscles are weakened, the pull of the muscle relaxes and the overlying skin flattens. Botox® Cosmetic is utilized to enhance your appearance and lessen the wrinkles caused by dynamic muscle movement in the upper part of your face. When done properly you can expect Botox® to smooth wrinkles without creating a “frozen face” appearance.
Our Technique
Botox® Cosmetic can be administered in the office in less than 30 minutes. There is typically no need for local anesthetic. Botox® is freshly prepared in 100 unit batches on the day of injection. Once prepared the medication needs to be used right away as the potency diminishes within several hours. For this reason, Botox® appointments are clustered on a “Botox® day” unless you plan to use a full batch. In order to achieve the best results, Dr. Hunsicker personally performs all Botox® injections. Small amounts of Botox® Cosmetic are injected into the facial muscles using a very tiny needle.
After your injection most people can return to work the same day. Occasionally people may experience a slight amount of bruising and/or swelling that can be alleviated by elevation and ice packs. It is advisable to refrain from exercise or lying flat for 4-6 hours after treatment. Most people notice that wrinkle lines are significantly reduced in a week, but it can take up to two weeks for some individuals. Results can last from 3-6 months.
As with any cosmetic procedure, complications from Botox®, although rare, do exist. The specific risks, as well as suitability, for any given individual and not be determined until the time of consultation. While we hope this information is helpful, it cannot substitute for a consultation. We invite you to contact us at 720-283-2500 or online to schedule a consultation with Dr. Hunsicker.
